 BREATHWORK

BREATHWORK

Because breathing is automatic, we can easily take it for granted. Breathing is quite simply the most important thing we do in our lives – without it we would simply expire! In fact Andrew Weil M.D., author of 8 Weeks to Optimum Health, states that conscious breathing is the most important thing we can do for our health, regardless of exercise and diet – truly a most amazing statement. Yet how often do we hold our breath when under stress, or similar circumstances?

Breathing techniques have always been used as part of meditation, martial arts, Tai chi, and other healing modalities. However, in western civilisation there has been little awareness of the power of the breath until recently, when used as part of stress management programmes and some alternative work.

In the healing breath process (also known as conscious or transformational breathing) one uses a complete, circular breathing technique which quickly and safely gets in touch with, and releases, our deepest emotions. This is a powerful process that can literally break down blocks on a mental, emotional, physical and cellular level. The experience can differ from session to session, and hence the process can be repeated and used as an on ongoing vehicle for change.

A personal breath session will take approximately 2 hours of uninterrupted time. It involves taking a brief client history and looking at your individual needs. The therapy is primarily undertaken lying down on the floor in a comfortable position, with blankets and padding for comfort, and learning how to do a full circular breath. This breath is continued for approximately three quarters of an hour, facilitated by a trained therapist, using various techniques to improve and develop the breath, and ends with a period of relaxation/deep meditation. The whole session uses loud, inspiring music.

Some of the benefits reported by participants are:

  • Insight into behaviours and feelings
  • Reduced anxiety
  • Reduced stress levels
  • Heart-felt joy and peace
  • Deep relaxation
  • Resolution of old emotional issues and wounds
  • Increased energy
  • Enhanced relationships
  • Feeling more in touch with one’s self
  • Greater self-image and self-esteem
  • Improvement in health
  • Inner peace
  • Development of greater spiritual awareness
